Nebraskans Should Search for Unclaimed Property, State Treasurer Says

LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - Newly-appointed State Treasurer Joey Spellerberg is asking Nebraskans to check for missing money as the end of the year approaches.

In a release Wednesday, Spellerberg pointed to two potentially valuable resources both in and out of the state of Nebraska.

Residents can check through Nebraska Lost Cash to find out about any property that may be theirs to claim. Property outside the state of Nebraska can be found through Missing Money.

“The unclaimed property overseen by the Treasurer’s Office doesn’t belong to the state — it belongs to our state’s residents,” Spellerberg said in the release. “Our mission is to reconnect Nebraskans with their unclaimed assets and to make the process as easy as possible.”

According to the release, 2025 saw Nebraska’s Unclaimed Property Division return over $16 million to nearly 16,500 claimants. Since its inception, officials say the program has returned about $260 million to its rightful owners.

Some common forms of unclaimed property include:

• Unpaid life insurance benefits
• Forgotten bank accounts
• Uncashed checks

Those with questions can call 877-572-9688 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

On Nov. 3, Gov. Jim Pillen announced that the current State Treasurer, Tom Briese, was stepping down. Spellerberg, who served as Fremont mayor at the time, was named as his replacement.
